These days, it would be hard to find an insurance company commercial that isn’t going for laughs. Since Geico gecko debuted in 1999, insurers have been airing humorous commercials for over two decades now. I may not be a big fan of Flo. Neither had I ever caught the dark humor of Mayhem. I am sure everyone has their favorites.
In this post, I will share with you my all-time top picks of 20 insurance commercials that make me laugh. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
1. Esurance – Sorta Mom (2015)
Starring Lindsay Lohan as the lead role in this simple yet informative skit, Esurance manages to highlight their policy of ‘pay what’s right for you” in a humorous manner. As an investor, hiring notable actors and other personalities can be an effective way of improving customer retention.
2. Lifewise of Washington – The Dance Troop (2010)
With the help of a dance troop and a nerdy salesman, Lifewise manages to break the third wall by indicating the “boring” nature of the advertisement and clever lines such as “Is it exciting yet?” Watch it to decide for yourself.
3. Liberty Mutual – “Weird Dream” (LiMu Emu & Doug) (2024)
Doug drifts through a parade where giant balloon versions of himself and LiMu Emu float above the crowd. The surreal visual + the running gag “Only pay for what you need” delivers instant goofy charm.
4. Farmers Insurance – Are You Covered for This? (2016)
In a way, the concept of expectation vs reality is a niche but clever idea. In this commercial, the enigmatic J.K. Simmons knocks it out of the park with his excellent presentation of the expectation vs reality concept in a light-hearted manner.
5. Geico – Maxwell the Piggy WeeWeeWee Series
Apart from Geico gecko and the Caveman, do you just love Maxwell piggy? In this series of ”WeeWeeWee” commercials, piggy doesn’t even need to say a word to make you laugh.
6. Geico Insurance – Hump Day Camel (2016)
No one in insurance treats animals better than Geico does. Who doesn’t welcome a camel annoying co-workers with random jokes and puns?
7. Centraal Beheer – You Must Be the Dutch Guy (2007)
It is really hard to pick just one commercial from the Dutch insurer Centraal Beheer. After a little struggle, I finally came up with three that will guarantee to make you giggle.
Let’s start with this hilarious one with the “Dutch Guy”, be sure to watch until the end.
8. Centraal Beheer – Monster Truck (2012)
Monster truck rallies are fun and engaging activities catered towards a specific group of hardcore drivers. One can rely on Centraal Beheer’s humor to consistently deliver on action-paced stunts.
9. Centraal Beheer – Commercial Picnic (2010)
Language can never act as a barrier as long the intended message is delivered in a clear manner. While most people can’t understand the meaning of the words in this advertisement, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand the meaning and tone of the skit. Likewise, the proverb “Actions speak louder than words”, is more than just a saying.
10. Nationwide – Butterfly Effect (2013)
While the true meaning of the butterfly effect is shrouded in mystery, the fact of the matter is Nationwide managed to beautifully incorporate the supposed “butterfly effect” in a series of interconnected accidents with a comic relief. Adhering to a fixed concept can serve as an ideal manner of representation.
11. Nationwide – The Switch (2006)
“Life comes at you fast”, thanks to a caring husband with a wife who can’t care less. Nationwide’s short yet simple ad on the topic of car insurance manages to encapsulate their services catered towards a particular division (in this case, cars).
12. Aflac – Dancing Duck (2014)
The first Aflac duck commercial aired on January 1, 2000. Together with Geico gecko, the pair have since disrupted insurance commercials like never before. It’s really hard to pick just one from the many Aflac’s commercials. As I love most of them. This dance-off between a talking duck and a pigeon is a good place to start.
13. Delta Lloyd Insurance – Annual Parade in North Korea Square (2011)
As a controversial yet amusing commercial, Delta Lloyd capitalizes on the North Korean regime by spreading the awareness of the dictator with a clever cliff-hanger.
14. State Farm – Chicago Bear Super Fans (2013)
As the former face of the California Golden Bears, Aaron Rodgers relates to fellow flight passengers on the trials one has to endure to get a window seat. Remember, grill class is always better than first class.
15. Liberty Mutual Insurance – Humans (2021)
“It’s amazing we made it this far”, perfectly summarizes the entire tribulation of human life. Sometimes all it takes is to be a beacon of light to brighten up one’s day. Liberty Mutual beautifully delivers this message in this breath-holding and humorous commercial.
16. Farmers Insurance – “Barn BnB” (Professor Burke) (2025)
J.K. Simmons deadpans through a string of barn-rental disasters—goats on bunk beds, hay-stack slip-n-slides—before the tagline: “We know a thing or two, because we’ve seen a thing or two.” Classic Farmers dark-humor, brand-new scenario.
17. King Price – Roadblock (2020)
“When nothing out there makes any sense, we do”, as the drama queen speeds across the bewildered security guard, as he tries to make sense of what actually happened. This poetic form of commercials can serve as an effective tool for insurers to reach a wider audience.
18. King Price – In-sho-sho (2024)
King Price, known for their cheeky humor, dropped the “Sho Sho” campaign in 2024 and it’s all about playful absurdity. Asking “Sho-sho” (a common South African saying) in various risky scenarios.
19. PHP Agency – Got Protection? (2020)
There are many ways to impress your sweetheart. So make sure you are covered by that sweet insurance to score points with your partner. Although a suggestive commercial, the comical delivery of the actor’s desperation to reach out to his friend Matt must be appreciated.
20. 1LifeDirect – I Need Life Insurance (2009)
Although cheating on your better half is despicable, 1Life Direct, a South African insurer, manages to turn an unfavorable topic into a hysterical commercial, especially with the portrayal of the actors involved, and also enlists the simple steps involved in availing their services. Sometimes, straightforward means of advertising can be the best way to make your day.
Why Funny Ads Convert: The brain-science (and data) behind the chuckles
Lever | What the research says | How to use it for your next campaign |
---|---|---|
⚡️ Instant recall | 90 % of consumers are more likely to remember a brand that makes them laugh. Fast Company | Open with an absurd visual (LiMu Emu in a dream parade, anyone?) so the first frame sticks in long-term memory. |
🧠 Dopamine → persuasion | Humor fires the brain’s reward circuit, lowering resistance to the sales message. Nielsen finds funny spots land the highest “breakthrough” scores across demos. Nielsen | Pair the punch-line right before your call-to-action so the feel-good chemicals halo the offer. |
👯♂️ Social currency | 72 % of people would choose a brand that uses humor over a straight-laced competitor. Fast Company | Bake in a meme-worthy moment (think Geico’s “Scoop! There it is”) that begs to be shared on TikTok/Reels. |
💬 Talk-value = free reach | Kantar’s Creative Effectiveness winners consistently feature humor because funny ads earn more organic word-of-mouth. Kantar | End with a quotable tagline or recurring character so audiences do the distribution for you. |
🔄 Loyalty loop | 80 % say they’re more likely to buy again from a brand that keeps them laughing. Fast Company | Extend the joke across campaigns (Liberty Mutual’s Emu) to turn one-off buyers into fans. |
Humor can be the secret sauce to a neurological shortcut to higher recall, more shares, and repeat buyers.
